Podcast Script

Introduction

April

The Paralympics showcase incredible resilience and talent—but what if the competition isn’t as fair as it seems?

According to ABC News, the Sydney 2000 Paralympics revealed that Spain had filled its team with 10 out of 12 players who were not disabled.

Let’s dive deeper as we uncover the ethical controversies hidden behind Paralympic medals.

Root Cause Analysis

April

Uncovering the Root: Understanding the Cause. We will hear from experienced individuals (an athlete and a coach) as they share their insights on the underlying causes of this incident.

Preventive Actions

April

Shaping the Solution: Preventive Actions for Success. We will now hear from a Lambton College faculty who knows ethics well, as she discusses the preventive actions that could have been taken to avoid these kinds of unethical behaviors.

Corrective Actions

Neelam

Today, we’re diving into a world where determination meets deception, cheating in the Paralympics!" What if I told you some athletes fake disabilities just to win Paralympic medals? Sounds crazy? It’s real! From faking muscle weakness to using wheelchairs only during assessments, deceiving the system—and it’s a massive problem!

Now let’s talk about "The infamous Paralympic scandal happened in Sydney 2000, when Spain’s basketball team won gold… but here’s the catch: only TWO players were actually disabled. The rest? Faking it!"

How do we stop this? Here’s the fix:

Stronger Classification Protocols: "More rigorous and frequent testing, using AI-based motion tracking and surprise re-evaluations!"

Surprise Re-evaluations: "Spot-checking athletes in their daily lives to compare their classification performances!"

Whistleblower Protections: Harsher Consequences: "If athletes knew they’d lose their entire career, would they risk it? We’ll discuss that in next segment!" "Because real champions don’t cheat!"

Punitive Measures

Neelam

Welcome Back! It’s time for THE WHEEL OF JUSTICE!  Where cheating athletes and enablers face REAL punishments! Let’s spin!"

CASE #1: Vinod Kumar - Misrepresentation at Tokyo 2020 appears on the screen Vinod Kumar faked his ability level, he got banned for 2 years. But what about his coach? His punishment is Coaches & Officials Penalized.

CASE #2: Thomas Oelsner - Doping:The Paralympic Doping Scandal appears on the screen. Thomas Oelsner lost his medals and got publicly exposed—But what does the wheel of justice decide… it’s Mandatory Sports Ethics Training."Cheating isn’t just about athletes—there’s a whole network behind them! here’s how we can ensure they don’t walk away clean..." Coaches: banned for life, Federations: fines & sanctions, Corrupt officials: permanently removed, Brands that knowingly support cheaters: financial penalties.

So, next time you think about cheating… just know, you might have to SPIN THE WHEEL OF JUSTICE!

Individual
Responsibility &
Professional
Learning

Ritika

Imagine training your whole life for the Paralympics, only to lose against athletes who cheated the system. Frustrating, right? Well, in 2016, that’s exactly what happened, and it wasn’t just one person’s fault, but a failure of individual responsibility at every level.

The Russian Paralympic team was banned from the Rio Games after investigators uncovered a massive state-sponsored doping program. But here’s the twist—this wasn’t just a government conspiracy. Individual doctors, coaches, and even anti-doping officials actively helped cover up positive test results. Some replaced urine samples, while others turned a blind eye. Imagine if just one of them had said, ‘No, this isn’t right.’ The scandal could have been stopped before it went global!

So, what could an individual professional have done? A coach could have refused to let doped athletes compete. A doctor could have exposed the false medical reports. A lab technician could have leaked the truth to the authorities. Even one act of integrity could have prevented this disaster. That’s the power of personal responsibility.

So, the answer is clear—when faced with unethical decisions, the right thing to do is to speak up. Because if you don’t, who will?

Personal Commitment

Victor

Ethical Lessons

Victor

Conclusion

Victor

Ethical responsibility does not stop at identifying wrongdoings; it involves personal commitment to doing better. Recognizing the consequences of ethical failures and making deliberate efforts to uphold integrity in our own actions. Making ethical decisions is not always easy, but standing firm in one’s values is a mark of strong character and leadership.

Sherron Watkins, former Vice President of Enron, exposed unethical financial practices in the company, knowing it could cost her job and reputation. She chose personal accountability over silence, reinforcing the idea that real ethical leadership starts with personal commitment.

Takeaway: Ethics is a daily choice, not a one-time declaration. How we act when no one is watching defines our true commitment to ethical integrity.

Moral Dilemmas in Professional & Personal Life: Sometimes, what is legally right may not be ethically right. Short-Term Gains vs. Long-Term Consequences: Compromising ethics for personal or organizational benefit often leads to greater damage. The Role of Ethical Leadership: Ethical leaders inspire trust and create environments where integrity is non-negotiable.

Volkswagen deliberately programmed its diesel engines to cheat emissions tests, prioritizing profit over environmental responsibility. The scandal cost them over $30 billion, damaged their reputation, and led to criminal charges against executives.

Takeaway: Ethical violations may not always have immediate consequences, but the truth always comes out. A culture of honesty and responsibility must be embedded from the top down.

Sustaining Ethical Awareness: It is not enough to understand ethics—we must actively apply ethical principles in decision-making. The Ripple Effect of Ethical Conduct: Even one person’s ethical decision can create a larger impact in an organization or industry. Long-Term Ethical Leadership: The most respected individuals and companies are not those who avoid controversy but those who stand firm in their values.

When Satya Nadella became Microsoft’s CEO, he shifted the company’s cutthroat competitive culture toward one of ethical responsibility, empathy, and inclusion. His people-first approach made Microsoft one of the most ethically respected global tech companies today.

Takeaway: Ethical leadership is about more than policies and compliance—it’s about setting an example that shapes the next generation of decision-makers.
